INTENTIONAL REST AMIDST BUSYNESS
It seems this past month has been go, go, go for me. I bought a new house, so there have been endless projects keeping me busy. I finally just moved in last Saturday. While the bigger projects are complete, the unpacking and decorating has continued to occupy my time. I am also preparing to move into a new treatment room at the studio, so have been chipping away at projects at work, too. I made an unexpected trip back to Iowa last week for a family funeral, which involved lots of time in the car. It seems that I have not had much time to rest, and my body is starting to communicate with me (let’s be honest, it has probably been trying to communicate with me for a while, but I’m just now finally tuning in enough to listen).
So Sunday, I planned to just rest. I could feel the beginnings of a cold coming on, and wanted to kick that before it got any worse, so decided to take the whole day to rest, recharge, and refuel. I thought maybe I would take a nap, read a book, go for a walk, talk to a friend…And while I did some of these things, the boxes in the living room kept calling to me to be unpacked. There was still more to do. How could I just sit around doing “nothing”?
Can you relate? Especially with the holidays approaching, this is a busy time of year for most people.
When I was in Costa Rica for massage therapy school, I often found rest at the beach. In the midst of a rigorous, accelerated program, I would daily retreat to the beach to find rest. It just seemed easier there. At the beach, there are no distractions, nothing else that “has to be done” at that moment. Now that I am back in the Midwest, I have to be intentional about how and when and where I rest, or for me it just won’t happen.
What does rest look like for you? Do you view rest as an afterthought? A necessity because you’re approaching burnout or your body is unhappy with you? Or is rest something you prioritize on a daily/weekly basis?
Some things I’ve found helpful when prioritizing rest in my life:
Listen to your body. It will communicate with you when it needs to rest.
Schedule it. Block it off on your calendar (and keep the “appointment” like you would a coffee date with your best friend or a meeting with your boss).
Figure out what is restful for you. (Binge watching Netflix all day may not actually be as restful as you think). What brings you life and refuels your energy?
Get adequate rest. Going to bed at a consistent time can be really helpful.
Spend time in nature. Go for a walk, a hike, a bike ride, or just sit on the back patio with a warm cup of tea and a good book.
Plan for roadblocks and obstacles. What are the things that distract you from resting? Sometimes it means I have to go somewhere other than my house, where there is always something to be done. Often it means turning my phone off so I’m not tempted to scroll on social media. What are your obstacles? How can you plan for them and set yourself up for success?
I’d encourage you to prioritize rest, in a culture that scoffs at that a bit. Your body and your mind will thank you!
These two quotes say it well…
